DENIM CLINIC: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE RISE…

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE RISE…

Which Rise? The “rise” of a jean is determined by the distance between the crotch and the waist. Knowing your rise measurement is the key to perfect fitting jeans.

Let me explain… we are all different body shapes and within those body shapes our proportions make us different again. So the key is to find the best rise for you. (see how below).
Knowing the measurement of your rise, will give you the confidence to play around with different styles of jeans.

TIP: Your rise measurement also applies to trousers, knickers & swimwear

HOW TO FIND THE BEST RISE FOR YOU

With your jeans on take a tape measure and measure from the crotch seam up to two fingers below your belly button. This will give you the measurement of the rise that will be comfortable for you. Or if you don’t have a tape measure use a ribbon or a piece of string. Take this shopping with you and use it as a guide when picking out jeans to try on.

Read the measuring guide

We keep seeing the return of the high-rise each season become a wardrobe staple for many women of all body shapes and ages. ilovejeans has hand picked a selection of styles below, note they all have a different rise measurement but are only recognized by high-rise and mid-rise style. So having your own personal rise measurement when shopping for jeans will narrow down the options helping you find your perfect jean with ease!

FASHION MATH: COST-PER-WEAR!

With the weather really turning cold now I’m on full throttle pulling together my winter wardrobe.

I tweeted earlier this week that Donna Ida was killing me with the fantastic choice of jeans/ leggings coming in-store.

Sadly I haven’t got an unlimited budget so on first look these must-haves are pretty expensive purchases.

So slip on your cost-per-wear hat and lets do the math…

Don’t forget you can get 15% OFF at Donna Ida till Friday if you use the code: BDAY15  at check out.

So here’s my cost-per-wear lust list….

J Brand 901 Skinny Legging – Coated Purple £250 Lets use an average of how many times these purple coated skinny’s will be worn as 5  times. Divide £250 by 5 = £50 per wear.

Add it to the basket!

Current/Elliott Pull Up Skinny jeans – Washed Castle £775

Love these suede leggings, pure luxe and really wearable. The price tag is high but I could wear these at least 6-8 times through out the winter. So on our cost-per-wear calculator it would cost between £96- £129 per wear.

Add it to the basket!

Elizabeth & James Military Parka – Olive £775

It was love at first sight when I saw this coat but the price is the sticking point. Now if I was to wear this parka as my winter coat from now (October) until  beginning of March (that’s 152 days in total) take away 14 day’s of non wear and use 138 times of wear as our figure (£775 divide by 138) = £5.62 cost-per-wear!!!

Now to decide what to buy first… ?

The Simple Denim Capsule Wardrobe

Mix & Match your 15 piece capsule collection.

You maybe asking what is a capsule wardrobe? Well let me explain, it’s a well thought out collection of clothing that works with your everyday lifestyle.

I was lucky to work with Susie Faux who invented both the phrase and the concept of “The Capsule Wardrobe” back in the 70s.
The owner of the London shop Wardrobe, is a great believer that women require less quantity, more quality. “A woman only needs two pairs of trousers”, she says, “but they have to fit perfectly, and you won’t get a well-fitting pair of trousers for less than a £100”.

No one needs wardrobes of clothes to look fabulous. We are going to focus on the denim capsule wardrobe as jeans tend to be most women’s preferred item of clothing.

Think about your lifestyle: When do you wear your jeans? Everyday, only on weekends or mostly going out. This will be your guide to bring in the clever pieces to make up your capsule wardrobe work for your lifestyle.
Picked out are 4 pairs of different styles of jeans, which can be teamed with all the 11 pieces below.

The School Run

This look is a quick and easy one, which should be a no brainer if you have the basic elements in place such as good fitting slim jeans, layering pieces and this seasons must have parka.

1: A great fitting pair of jeans, is the foundation of your denim capsule wardrobe. Here I have picked out Mary Portas high-rise, slim leg jean in indigo which will tuck in any love handles and give a slim silhouette to the body (sizes 8-18). A perfect jean for winter, as it will give you the option of tucking them into boots, wearing with heels or flats.

2: There’s nothing better than sliding into a pair of Corduroy trousers when the weather gets chilly. The J Brand Ali high-rise flared cords are a perfect for an office to bar look. A leather jacket is an investment piece so worth spending more on. The blouse is so versatile it can be worn dressed up or down. This animal print blouse updates any wardrobe.

The Marrakesh mid-rise flared jeans by MiH is a hybrid, a great fitting pair of black jeans that look like trousers are both classic and an investment purchase. Mint Velvet’s Leather Front Skinny Trousers will keep you stylish and can be teamed with any of the 14 tops/ jackets in your capsule wardrobe.

DENIM CLINIC: HOW TO BANISH CAMEL TOE FOREVER!

If you suffer from “Camel Toe” then listen up as it can be avoided and should be at all cost!

If your unfamiliar of the term Camel Toe, let me clarify…..

A vaginal wedgie(“vedgie”), most commonly caused by tight pants that work their way into the crevices of the vaginia making a shape that clearly resembles a camel’s toe.

It has to be said that there is a small percentage of women, who purposely dress to show off their camel toe to attract sexual attention.  However there is a higher percentage of women of a certain age that fall victim to the dreaded “Camel Toe”.

It’s a combination of two factors:

1)Wearing jeans with a short rise, pulled up too high around the waist. (often pulled in with a belt)

2)Holding weight around the lower tummy and pubic area. (this exacerbates the problem)

Ok so here are my 4 tips on how to banish the camel toe forever.

#1: Choose a higher rise jean: The rise is the measurement from the top of the waistband down to the bottom of the crotch seam. A higher rise jean sits comfortably below your belly button covering your bottom & hip area. The common cause of camel toe is wearing a lower rise jean pulled up over the hips, cutting the crotch area in two.

#2: Find the best rise for you: With your jeans on take a tape measure and measure from the crotch seam up to two fingers below your belly button. This will give you the measurement of the rise that will be comfortable for you. Or if you don’t have a tape measure use a ribbon or a piece of string. Take this shopping with you and use it as a guide when picking out jeans to try on.

#3: Don’t go so tight: Denim with stretch can give you a false sense of security and may give the option of taking a smaller size. If you suffer from camel toe then take the size that’s comfortable rather than figure hugging.

#4: Do the sit test: When shopping for jeans, always sit down in the jeans to make sure they are comfortable and not cutting into the crotch. This is a great way to measure if the rise is too short for your figure that can lead to camel toe.

Another alternative ideal for swimwear is the Cuchini – Say No To Camel Toe!

Check out the following figure fixing jeans with a higher rise.

Pear Or Hourglass? What’s The Difference?

This post was inspired by an email from a reader questioning why an hourglass was included in the pear shape catagory on the ilovejeans.com body shape tool. She felt that her hourglass body shape had nothing to do with a pear shape.

Pear or Hourglass?

Right let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of the two body shapes…

Pear ( Left) Hourglass (Right)

Pear : Your hips are slightly wider than your shoulders with a slim upper body, smaller bust, broadening to a fullness in the hip, bottom & thigh area. A high percentage of women in the UK fall into this body shape. Pears can be all sizes, petite to plus size.

Hourglass: Your hips & bust are about the same size with your waist being approx 10″ smaller, with a fuller bottom. The interesting factor with an hourglass is that an overweight pear can fall into this body shape ( putting weight on the top half as well on the bottom).

You can see in the body shapes above the top half is the difference in a pear & hourglass. Gok Wan often mentions that clothing manufacturers and dress makers still design to an hourglass manniquin shape. When it comes to dressing the bottom half of a pear or hourglass in jeans, the formula is the same.

As a stylist with 20 years experience, I have dressed many women with different body shapes and the constant challenge is to get them fitted into jeans suitable for their shape.

What’s the problem?:

Finding a style that fits on the waist and on the hips is the difficulty. Often a pair of jeans in a bigger size is purchased to house the hips & bottom but the waist is too big and gapes at the small of the back. This is a common problem for both pear & hourglass and the only answer to get around the gape is to follow the rules….

5 Curvy Girl Rules To Follow:

#1:Choose a higher rise jean. The rise is the measurement from the top of the waistband down to the bottom of the crotch seam. A higher rise jean sits comfortably below your belly button covering your bottom & hip area.

b: Find the best rise for you: With your jeans on take a tape measure and measure from the crotch seam up to two fingers below your belly button. This will give you the measurement of the rise that will be comfortable for you. Or if you don’t have a tape measure use a ribbon or a piece of string. Take this shopping with you and use it as a guide when picking out jeans to try on.

#2: Always choose a style with at least 1% Lycra mix in the fabric content ( you can check on the label inside the jean). This is important for comfort and for keeping shape. Lycra & Elastane do the same job. I have found jeans with a Cotton, Polyester & Lycra mix keep the best shape.

#3: Choose a wider waistband. Perfect for sitting on the hip & the smallest part of your waist. Often a wider waistband sits higher on the back, so no knickers showing.

#4: Look to balance out your curves. When choosing a leg shape opt for a boot cut, wide leg or kickflare to balance out your curves. If you’re hankering for a skinny style, go for a straight leg rather than a skinny style but remember keep the rise high!

#5: Do your homework. There are a handful of denim brands & retailers that specifically have styles for ladies with curves. Check them out as they were created for you…
